How to convert a text file to PDF

Plain text files are easy to write but awkward to send. Some people cannot open them on a phone, and they print with whatever font and margins the computer picks. A PDF fixes the layout so it looks the same everywhere.

This converter works in any modern browser on desktop or mobile. There is nothing to install and no sign-up.

Pasting is handy when the text is not saved as a file yet, for example an email you want to keep, a list copied from a website, or output copied from a terminal window.

  1. Click Choose a text file or drag a .txt file onto the drop zone. You can also paste text straight into the text box.
  2. Choose US Letter or A4 for the page size.
  3. Pick a font size (10, 11, 12, or 14 pt), and turn on Monospace font (keeps columns aligned) if your text has columns.
  4. Click Convert to PDF. The PDF downloads automatically, and a download button also appears.

Notepad to PDF: the built-in way and the easier way

On Windows, Notepad can print to Microsoft Print to PDF, which saves the text as a PDF file. On a Mac, TextEdit can export a document as a PDF. Both are reasonable if you are already at that computer with the file open.

The catch is availability and control. On a phone or a borrowed computer you may not have either app, and print settings differ from one machine to the next. This tool gives you the same result on any device, with a clear choice of paper size and font size, and a monospace option for text that needs its columns lined up.

It also helps with text files you received from someone else, such as exported logs or plain-text reports. You do not need to open them in an editor first; drop the file in and pick your settings.

How your text is laid out

The converter respects your text exactly. Every line break is kept, blank lines stay blank, and lines that are too long for the page wrap onto the next line instead of running off the edge.

Monospace font is the option to use for anything where characters need to line up: log files, plain-text tables, code, configuration files, or ASCII diagrams. Every character takes the same width, so columns stay aligned in the PDF just as they were in your editor. Leave it off for ordinary prose, which reads more comfortably in the standard font.

Font size ranges from 10 to 14 pt. Use 10 pt to fit wide lines with less wrapping, or 14 pt for text that will be read on paper by someone who prefers larger print.

The PDF contains real, selectable text, so it can be searched and copied.

Privacy and limits

Your text stays on your device. The PDF is generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded to PaperPorter, so it is fine for personal notes, server logs, or anything with names and account numbers in it.

Text files can be up to 5 MB. The PDF uses standard PDF fonts covering English and Western European characters, so other scripts (Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, and so on) and emoji appear as "?". The tool treats everything as plain text; Markdown symbols are printed as typed.

Tips and common problems

Columns look jagged. Turn on the monospace option. Tables built with spaces only line up when every character has the same width.

Too much wrapping. Drop the font size to 10 pt, or use monospace with a smaller size for long log lines.

Asterisks and pound signs everywhere. If your file is really Markdown, use MD to PDF instead so headings and lists are formatted.

Accented letters. Western European characters such as é, ü, and ñ print correctly. If you see question marks, the text likely contains characters from another script or emoji.

Choose your .txt file or paste the text above, pick a page size and font size, and click Convert to PDF. The PDF downloads straight to your device.

How do I convert a Notepad file to PDF?

Notepad files are .txt files, so you can add them here directly. On Windows you can also print from Notepad to Microsoft Print to PDF.

What is the largest text file I can convert?

Text files up to 5 MB are supported, which is far more than most documents need.
