How to convert Markdown to PDF

Markdown is great for writing, but not everyone you send it to has a Markdown viewer. A PDF looks the same on every device and prints cleanly. This tool formats your Markdown and builds the PDF right in your browser, with no install and no sign-up.

You can start from a file, such as a README.md or notes exported from a writing app, or simply paste Markdown into the text box.

  1. Click Choose a Markdown file or drag your .md file onto the drop zone. You can also paste Markdown into the text box instead.
  2. Choose a page size: US Letter or A4.
  3. Pick a font size of 10, 11, 12, or 14 pt.
  4. Click Convert to PDF. The PDF downloads automatically, and a download button appears as well.

Markdown to PDF without extra software

Developers often convert Markdown with command-line document converters or with an editor extension that adds an export option. Another common route is opening the Markdown preview in an editor or browser and using Print to PDF. These give lots of control, but they mean installing something, configuring it, or fixing page breaks and styles by hand.

This converter is the simpler option when you just need a readable PDF of one document: a README to share with a client, meeting notes, a short spec, or homework written in Markdown. It works on any computer or phone with a modern browser, including machines where you cannot install software.

Pasting also helps when your Markdown lives somewhere other than a file, such as a note in a writing app, a comment you drafted, or a snippet from a chat. Copy it, paste it into the text box, and convert. The formatting rules are the same either way.

What Markdown is supported

The converter handles the Markdown people use most: headings at all six levels, paragraphs, bold and italic text, inline code, bulleted and numbered lists (including nested lists), block quotes, and horizontal rules.

Fenced code blocks are set in a monospace font on a light gray background so they stand out from body text. Tables are rendered as aligned monospace rows, which keeps columns lined up and readable.

Links show their text, but the URLs themselves are not printed. Images are not embedded; each one appears as a placeholder like [image: alt text], using the alt text you wrote.

The PDF contains real text, not a picture of text, so readers can search it and copy from it.

Privacy and limits

Your Markdown never leaves your device. The PDF is built in your browser, and nothing is uploaded to PaperPorter, which is useful for internal docs, drafts, and private notes.

Files can be up to 5 MB. The PDF uses standard PDF fonts, which cover English and Western European characters. Other scripts, such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, or Cyrillic, and emoji will appear as "?" in the PDF, so this tool is not a good fit for documents in those languages.

The converter also does not apply custom themes or CSS. Every PDF uses the same clean, readable layout, which keeps results consistent but means you cannot change colors or fonts beyond the font size option.

Tips for clean Markdown PDFs

Leave a blank line around lists and code blocks. Markdown relies on blank lines to tell where one block ends and the next begins. Missing ones are the usual reason a list runs into a paragraph.

Write link text that makes sense on paper. Since URLs are not printed, "see the setup guide" works better than "click here." If a reader needs the address, put it in the text as inline code.

Keep tables narrow. Tables become monospace rows, so very wide tables can wrap. A smaller font size such as 10 pt gives wide tables more room.

Remove emoji before converting. They will print as question marks.
